The Port Shepstone Bullslingers Club is a registered service club that supports needy children.

The club operates only on the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast between Hibberdene in the North and Port Edward in the South and as far inland as Kokstad.

The Club has an interesting history. The Club was formed in 1967 by a few gentlemen who frequented the Milton hotel in Port Shepstone.

One night, whilst sitting at the hotel bar , they collected all their loose change and decided to start a fund solely for the benefit of under privileged children in the area . They also decided to call the fund the Port Shepstone Bullslingers fund which later , when registered , became The Port Shepstone Bullslingers Club.

One of the largest and popular fund raisers organised and run by the club is the annual Umzimkulu tube race . The tube race which started in 1978, has now become one of the most popular social events on the South Coast Calendar . Apart from raising an enormous amount of money for needy children , the race also promotes business for the local community as many of the entrants travel from other centres in the country to participate .

Other events organised and run by the Club through the year normally include a London Pub Night. For the past twelve years we have been offering a gift wrapping service at the Shelly shopping centre during the weeks before Christmas - proving to be a great fund raiser.

We also run Splatball (paint ball) games throughout the year as their fund-raisers as fun for the young (and oldies with young hearts & bones!!). Contact Alastair on 082 563 4993 for further information.

The Club also organises a social quiz evening between ourselves and other local Service Clubs, in order to foster good relations between us all - as we all work towards similar goals.

All funds generated by the Club are used to assist underprivileged children from all the different racial and ethnic groups in the area . The methods of donation are unique as the members of the Club are never aware of the exact names of the children they are assisting . This method was adopted to avoid any embarrassment on behalf of the child , children or family concerned . All cases referred to the Club are investigated by the Club's " Investigating Officer " before a committee decision is made to donate the funds .

The Port Shepstone Bullslingers Club is a unique organisation as it was the first organisation to have members of both genders serving on its committee . The portfolio of Club President has in the past been and is at present held by a female member . The Club also has a reputation of " getting the job done " however big or small. Physical labour is the order of the day as in many instances instead of making cash donations the members of the Club become physically involved with the fund raiser. An example of this is the official opening of the South Coast Place of Safety Trust which involved all the Service Clubs on the South Coast . Other Service Clubs made cash donations however the Bullslingers gathered their resources and redecorated the entire building - using Club funds to pay for the materials used. We have this year supported a local drug rehabilitation centre for teenagers, Hibberdene Childrens home, Harding special school and various schools in the area.
